Work Undertaken

Thompson Stanbury Associates provides consulting services to private developers, community groups, local government, state government and civil engineering firms. The highly specialised traffic and transportation related services include:

1. Traffic Impact Studies
2. Modelling and Traffic Analysis
3. Traffic Signal and Intersection Design
4. Local Area Traffic Management
5. Traffic Data Collection and Analysis
6. Roadway Design
7. Road Safety Audits

Traffic Impact Studies

Thompson Stanbury Associates provides the services necessary to conduct traffic impact studies for new developments. We have experience in conducting traffic impact studies for large and small developments including commercial land uses, residential land uses, educational land uses, industrial land uses and many combinations of mixed land use developments.

The traffic impact studies typically include the collection of current traffic volume data within the study area. The current traffic data is then combined with traffic volumes projected to be generated by proposed new adjacent land uses and by the study development. Analyses are conducted under current and projected future traffic conditions to determine the traffic impact the new development is expected to have on the adjacent street system. The resultant information is used to identify solutions to reduce or mitigate the impact in the form of roadway and / or traffic control modifications.

Modelling and Traffic Analysis

Thompson Stanbury Associates utilises computer based intersection packages to conduct traffic simulation modelling and analyses of traffic flow characteristics on intersections, street networks, corridors, interchanges and highways. Programs such as INTANAL and SIDRA are utilised to assess isolated intersections operating a range of different operating controls such as signage, roundabout and traffic signals. SCATES is utilised to assess coordinated traffic signal operating systems.

The analyses are used for the determination of optimum traffic signal timing for isolated signalised intersections and coordinated traffic signal systems. The analyses are also used to review existing geometric alignments, or future geometric changes to intersections, street corridors and highway interchanges.

Traffic Signal and Intersection Design

Thompson Stanbury Associates has designed numerous isolated signalised intersections throughout New South Wales and Australia. We have a philosophy to design traffic signals keeping maintenance needs in mind and ensuring that only equipment that the client is capable of maintaining is utilised. In many projects, it is necessary to add capacity to intersections by widening and / or providing appropriate channelisation which may require only minor modification to the existing traffic signal design.

Thompson Stanbury Associates has extensive experience designing local and state government funded projects to meet all government requirements in a timely manner.

Local Area Traffic Management

Thompson Stanbury Associates provides the services necessary to conduct a complete analysis for a route or road network to determine traffic engineering needs. Information is gathered including traffic signal inventories, road marking and signage inventories, crash data, traffic volume data and other traffic and transportation plan review information.

The information is summarised and a study is conducted to determine and recommend short and long term solutions to improve route and road network system safety and efficiency, reduce liability exposure and assist in the future development or expansion of the route or road network transportation infrastructure.

Traffic Data Review and Analysis

Thompson Stanbury Associates is experienced in the review and analysis of traffic data associated with the assessment of current and projected traffic flow information. These services include collating information in the form of 24 hour seven day traffic counts, vehicle classification counts, vehicle speed counts and intersection turning movement counts.

Thompson Stanbury Associates has experience in analysing electronic data and the presentation of traffic characteristics as accurately as possible. The data is used to complete traffic studies including traffic impact studies, operational analysis studies, classification studies, travel time and delay studies, vehicle gap studies and license plate studies.

Roadway Design

Roadway design is a necessary part of many transportation related projects. Thompson Stanbury Associates has provided concept designs for multiple route and road network projects including widening for left turn bays, right turn bays, and other capacity increasing treatments. A complete and thorough knowledge of roadway capacity techniques has been developed to analyse the needs of the routes and road networks. The analysis of traffic volume data and accident analysis generally also forms part of these projects.

Thompson Stanbury Associates has provided concept designs for sections of urban and rural roadway. It has served as a sub-consultant to other civil engineering firms to perform traffic projections, traffic analysis and to provide basic geometric design for new residential, industrial and commercial precincts.

Road Safety Audits

Thompson Stanbury Associates is an accredited road safety auditor having undertaken many audits on behalf of private developers, community groups, local government and state government. The road safety audits have been undertaken throughout the various concept design, detailed design, pre opening and operational stages of a route and / or road network.

The aim of road safety audits are to identify any potential safety hazards for road users associated with a route or road network or safety issues that are prevalent and to ensure that measures to eliminate or reduce safety problems are fully considered. In undertaking audits, all potential safety risks are identified and are issued with correction action requests.
